The Latest In Charleston Restaurants & Retail

Charleston Happenings Vol. 51

The Hottest New Restaurants In Charleston

If you can’t tell, I love profiling new restaurants. Kim might say I love torturing myself, too. Some of my very favorite Instagram follows are Off Track Ice Cream, Glazed Gourmet Donuts, and lately Palmira Barbecue. The visuals on their accounts are so damn appetizing!

I’ve been following Palmira Barbecue for well over a year. Hector Garate, the chef/owner, has been popping up around town for a while, before his restaurant opened recently in West Ashley. I never had a chance to try the ‘cue at any of his pop-ups.

But I finally visited the new restaurant. And when in Rome…

One of the specialties is smoked beef cheeks. If it sounds NOT like your cup of tea, I advise you to reconsider. 🤣 Oh, and definitely go for the Puerto Rican Beans as a side.

Click below to see Chef Garate’s inclusion in a list of very impressive newcomers.

Mexican Food & A Butcher A Mile Apart

Does that sound like a clue to a bar trivia game? Nah, it’s just a great combo.

In real life, in West Ashley.

Santi’s and New York Butcher Shoppe opened near each other on the west side of town recently. Santi’s is a Charleston OG, opening its original restaurant on Meeting Street downtown in 2002.

New York Butcher Shoppe is a bit newer to the Charleston scene, but its West Ashley store makes it 6 in the Charleston area!

Cozy Bars To Visit With The Inevitable Last Winter Blast

If you were paying attention in early February, you noticed a certain lovable rodent let us know we’re gonna have an early Spring. But sometimes he’s wrong.

Frankly, wouldn’t you be a little cranky if you were yanked out of your cozy abode early in the morning, only to be stared at by men in tuxedos and tophats?

But I digress. In the event Punxsutawney Phil IS wrong, you’re gonna need to know where the coziest bars are when winter refuses to yield its icy grip.

We have the list below.

Don’t Sleep On The Upper Peninsula

Locals know that the most interesting spots are in areas not frequented by visitors. The upper peninsula is one of those.

There are a bunch of great restaurants, bars and distilleries in this northern stretch of town.

And since this is my newsletter, I’m gonna give a special shout-out to one of my favorites, Brewlab. The way the great people at Brewlab have embraced our Liverpool supporters club warms my heart. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 7:30 or 10:00 AM kickoff, the doors are open and we’re greeted by the friendly faces of Lex, Megan, Nick or Tara.

Get there and these places, too.
