Charleston SC Shines: Esquire’s Best New Restaurants and Holiday Highlights

Charleston’s culinary rep continues to punch far above its weight.

Two area restaurants made the cut for Esquire’s 2024 Best New Restaurants In America.

Charleston's star continues to rise, and the latest accolade comes from Esquire's Best New Restaurants in America for 2024. Two local gems—Bintü Atelier and Kultura—have been honored, showcasing the city's rich and diverse gastronomic offerings. Let’s explore these standout establishments, upcoming festive events, and some must-know local news!

Esquire’s Shoutout: Bintü Atelier and Kultura

Bintü Atelier

Located at 8D Line Street, Bintü Atelier is the brainchild of chef-owner Bintou N’Daw Young. Born in Senegal, Chef Bintou brings the vibrant flavors of West Africa to Charleston, offering dishes like jollof rice, fufu, and mafe. Her culinary journey includes time in France and New York City, culminating in this intimate Eastside spot that celebrates African cuisine's rich heritage.

Kultura

Situated at 73 Spring Street, Kultura is helmed by chef Nikko Cagalanan, who hails from the Philippines. After moving to the U.S. in 2011 and working as a nurse, Chef Nikko pursued his passion for cooking, eventually bringing his Filipino-inspired pop-up to a permanent location. Kultura offers elevated Filipino dishes, such as sisig carbonara and arroz caldo, all inspired by his grandmother, Mansueta.

Both restaurants exemplify Charleston's dynamic culinary scene, blending traditional flavors with innovative techniques to create unforgettable dining experiences.

Mount Pleasant’s Proposed Sales Tax Increase

Mount Pleasant is weighing a 1% sales tax increase, which would raise the town’s total sales tax to 10%. The additional revenue, if approved, would be specifically earmarked for funding infrastructure and tourism-related improvements in the Patriots Point area.

Planned projects include upgrades to parking, enhanced pedestrian access, and other amenities designed to make Patriots Point a more attractive and accessible destination for visitors and locals alike. While supporters argue the tax will boost tourism and enhance one of Mount Pleasant's key assets, critics question whether the increase is justified for such a narrowly focused effort.

The proposal is still under discussion, with the potential to shape the future of one of Mount Pleasant's most visited areas.
