Ashley Landing Mall Gets Green Light For Redevelopment

Retail real estate—shopping centers, urban storefronts, freestanding restaurants—is THE most vibrant commercial real estate type. Fight me on that!

It really is, though. Compared to apartments, warehouses and office buildings, these properties are the most public-facing real estate. Some Charleston-area retail properties attract tens of thousands of visitors every day!

Multiply that level of traffic over a number of years, and these projects eventually need redeveloping. A West Ashley shopping center was recently approved for just that.

Ashley Landing (originally opened as Ashley Plaza and later known as Ashley Plaza Mall) was the first indoor shopping mall in West Ashley when it was fully completed in 1972. It’ll look considerably different when it’s re-made.

Pawleys Island-based Food Vendor To Launch New Mount Pleasant Dining Venue On Jan. 3.

Get Carried Away, with its well-known Palmetto Cheese pimiento cheese brand, will roll into the former Wild Wings Cafe space in Moultrie Plaza on Coleman Boulevard, according to owner Brian Henry.

The outside area, called The Perch, will be open for casual eating and drinking and will offer full service in late winter or early spring.

New Charleston Restaurant Continues To Garner Acclaim

Kultura, which has had a ton of buzz since it opened mid-summer, was named South Carolina Restaurant of the Year by Eater Carolinas.

It seems to be well-deserved. We’ve talked to numerous people who’ve dined at Kultura, and none were disappointed.

Aldi To Open 7th Store In Charleston Area

A portion of the former Bi-Lo on Folly Road on James Island has been leased by Aldi. Last year, Planet Fitness leased and renovated 25,000 square feet on the east side of the former supermarket.

Aldi definitely believes in the Charleston market. It’s the 2nd store announced this year. In May, the company leased several acres at U.S. Highway 17 and KOA Campground Road for a second Mount Pleasant location.
